How much is an autographed copy of The Black Cauldron worth?
I have a 1965 print of "The Black Cauldron" by Lloyd Alexander. It is a little beat up (it was a library copy), but it's a hard back and in what I would consider fair condition. The special thing about this book is that it's autographed by the author. I can't find any info out there on this one book. So any book dealers or appraisers out there who might have an idea, I'd love to know. Thanks.
Well... the more beat up a book is, the less valuable it is. Even an autograph from the author might not always push up the value of the book, to be honest. (Although supposedly Alexander's signature might be worth more.) Plus it being a library book may or may not add value to the book. Here's a list of info that any appraiser would need to have in order to give you an estimate:
1) ISBN. (This should be on the back of the book or on the information page with the publisher name.)
2) Publisher. (Sometimes different publishers can make a book more or less valuable.)
3) Edition number. (The earlier the edition, the better. This number will be on the info page as well. It may be listed in a variety of ways, but you always go with the lowest number.)
4) What damage has been done to the book? (A detailed listing & a photograph is absolutely necessary. Leave nothing out. Every scuff, every bent page, every penmark & sticker will bring down the value of your book. If there's anything on it that can't be removed sticker or insert-wise, then that'll bring down the value a LOT.)
5) Is there any special attribute to the book? (Is it a special edition for a book club or anything to that nature?)
6) A photograph of the signature. (This will help determine if it is actually Alexander's signature & not someone else signing the book instead. Don't suppose it came with a photo of the signing, did it?)
If you really do have a signature of his, it could be worth a lot of money. IF it is his signature. You really need to take it into someone in a rare book store & let them see it in person to be entirely sure. Just remember that the condition of the book & that it was an ex-library book (exlib) will bring down the overall value.
If you do go to any used book store, bring someone you trust with you that can help keep you from getting hoodwinked if it is his signature. Some of the signed books are going for around $100 on various sites, so it could be worth some money. (The condition might make that amount fluctuate some, but offhand the signature might make a difference.)
