Wagner's "Tristan und Isolde": best interpretation(s) you've ever heard/seen? live, recorded?
There have been countless recordings of this complete opera - this "icon" of great romantic music - of numerous excerpts from it(the famous "Liebestod", etc.), piano transcriptions of them, or for other instruments.
The "Liebestod" is a perennial concert favorite, more often than not, with out a vocalist.
So which is your favorite rendentition, in whole or in part: lp, VCR, CD, DVD, whatever, and whenever it was recorded.
I recently checked out from the local County Library, a Bayreuth Festival recording of it, made in 1966-7(CD transfer 1997), with Karl Bohm conducting and Wolfgang Windgassen and Birgit Nilsson in the title roles: best complete version I've ever heard, bar none.
Regarding recorded excerpts: back in the 50's, Leopold Stokowski arranged an orchestral version of the love duet, Second II, where he appenged the Liebestod to its conclusion, and recorded it with the (then great) Philidelphia orchestra: sublime. Your favorites?
The Karl Bohm /Windgassen / Birgit Nilsson was the first version I heard and I still own the CD version and listen to it. Hard to beat the great feeling of discovery of the first listen of such a monumental work and still hard to beat Birgit Nilsson.
Live is something else altogether but if I had pick my favorite conductor it would be Levine at the Met in 1999 and this year, better Bohm because he is so precise and cool, the sound seems to melt in your ears. I'm sorry I never got to see Birgit Nilsson and Jon Vickers do it together that was legendary and people still speak about their performance at the Met.
As a part of the opera done in concert, it was most of the second act, with Jessye Norman, at the beginning of her career, as Isolde and Jon Vickers, near the end of his as, Tristan. This was at Tanglewood and although we only had lawn seats I just melted down into the shed and took an empty seat. I just pretended I didn't see the usher who should have kept me out - I've never done anything like that before or since. It was one the best Musical experiences in my life. Ms. Norman never sang a complete Isolde as far as I know, although she was a regular Sieglinde and Kundry, but she was magic on that afternoon.
