Review of The Last Airbender movie
2 weeks ago, I saw The Last Airbender. It was a pretty okay movie. it wasnt too bad cinematically speaking, but every theing else was just okay. Also note that I didn't watch the whole series on Nickelodeon or Nicktoons Network(You're welcome for the free advertising).
Story: The story was pretty close to the original. The two kids, Katara and Sokka, find a large six-legged Sky Bison and a young boy. The boy happens to be the Avatar, the one person who can bend all four elements. The elements(you all who watch the show should know this) are Air, Water, Earth, Fire. Also note that at the beginning of the movie, a small graphic pops up that says Book One: Water. That automatically tips me off that this is going to be a trilogy. But the story is good.
How close did they get to the true characters?: Not too close at all. I know that the show was a cartoon, but they could have picked a boat load of asians for the parts. As I remember it, the only white looking people were in the Water Nation. Aang was a white kid, which only fit cause he has huge eyes. Zuko was played by Dev Patel of Slumdog Millionaire fame. But even his uncle was played by a white guy. The only people that they got spot on were the Earth Nation. They were all played by Asian people.
Writing/Acting:The writing was pretty basic. It had few cheesy one-liners and not many adjectives. It was like you expected someone to say something at a specific time. The acting wasn't the best on the good side. The bad guys seemed to have all the bigger names. Dev Patel from Slumdog Millionaire and Aasif Mandvi of The Daily Show With Jon Stewart are both playing pivotal roles in the Fire Nation.
Compared to the Original: It can hold its own. I don't think too many fanboys will like the movie, but they won't hate it. Its okay for the general public too.
Overall: It was an okay movie if you didn't see the show. Even then, it still gets a 3.5.
