Gerald Ford

Essay: Woodrow to Reagan

Sample Essay

President Herbert Hoover was in office during the Great Depression and he used his power in all ways possible in efforts he thought would end it. He increased the tax to the highest amount in the history of the United States. All types of taxes, including income and corporate were increase gigantic proportions. His uses of power led the United States economy to tumble even further down into debt. (Brinkley & Dyer 332)

President Franklin D. Roosevelt served the United States for four long terms and resided in office during a Great Depression and a World War. He drafted the New Deal help underprivileged and poor people to recover from the catastrophe of the Great Depression. He believed that government relief could help people get on their feet again after the economy had stumbled. (Brinkley & Dyer) It can be argued that his reforms to help the poor might have resulted in people being dependant on welfare. Roosevelt was also responsible for ‘lend lease', a program that would lend war supplies to the allies of the United States in World War II. (Brinkley & Dyer) His actions might have been the result of ending the World War but helping out the allies in times of need.

President Truman, like every other President was a firm believer of democracy and one of the very few who actually used his powers to battle it. The Truman Doctrine and the Marshall Plan were the workings of President Truman to stop the expansion of communism in Europe. (Brinkley & Dyer) He successfully contained the spread of communism in Europe through whatever means he could use.

The Equal Rights Amendment started by Alice Paul has failed to be a part of the American Constitution after two attempts of being ratified. "In October 1971 and March 1972, the House of Representatives and the Senate of the United States adopted a proposed amendment to our Constitution providing equal rights for men and women. By August 26, 1972, twenty States had ratified the proposed constitutional amendment; only eighteen more were needed for the proposed amendment to become part of our Constitution." (Woolley & Peters) In his time, President Gerald Ford was a huge a huge supporter of the ERA. "I, GERALD R. FORD, President of the United States of America, [want to] remind all Americans that it is fitting and just to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment adopted by the Congress of the United States of America, in order to secure legal equality for all women and men, do hereby designate and proclaim August 26, 1975, as Women's Equality Day." (qtd. in Woolley & Peters) Unfortunately the ‘ERA' has failed to be a part of our constitution even after a Proclamation dedicated especially to the issue was declared by the President of the United States.
