Do you think the 2001 Alliance version of Steve Austin was a lowlight in his career?
We all know what made Stone Cold initially popular was his bad @ss loner attitude and his feud with Bret Hart. I think a lowpoint in his career as Stone Cold though, and luckily he rebounded from it, was when he was put in skits with Angle and McMahon and was in there singing songs on his guitar and hugging McMahon. It totally went against everything that made him popular. I was watching some videos today of these skits and thought 'Man, this was bad'. What are your thoughts? Did you like this version of Austin?
It's like Cena. Cena needs a heel turn and a different gimmick for a little while so that when he turns face again it'll be relevent and fresh again. Austin was the same way. If he was always just one constant then he'd have grown stale. When he became the rebel stone cold again we went crazy. It worked for him. CM Punk is another guy who needs to do something different. I didn't dislike the skits with Austin and Angle but I wasn't a big fan of them either. Also doing this gave other people time to be in the spotlight that Austin and the Rock had taken up for years before then. It may be due to this time period that we have some of the great superstars that we have today.
