I'm looking to identify this army uniform. I'm also interested in how/when the photograph was made?

It's a postcard, looks like it's a matte collodion POP, I just need more information!
I'm not sure I can identify the uniform specifically but from some quick searches I think I may have narrowed it down for you. The insignia on the hat of the soldier looks to be either British or Canadian Cavalry, also the way the trousers are wrapped below the knees usually denotes a horse unit. It may be from the British Columbia Dragoons I found some images that resemble the one in you shot. Secondly judging from the photo I would say it was very early 1900's.
