How to pose people for a company photo?
Tomorrow I am taking photos for a company's website. This is my first time photographing people when they are posed, not candid. The owner, his two sons, and his wife will be in the picture. The owner is like 6 feet tall. The wife is about 5 ft. And the two sons are around 5'5"-5'6". I'm not sure how to pose them because if the wife is next to the owner, it would be medium, tall, short, medium. One of the sons (the older, taller one) actually works for the company but if he is in the middle with the owner, the wife will be on the end. How should I do this?
Sounds like a group photo in the works. Plus something representing the company in the photo, foreground or background. Or in?
I would make it a family type photo. Husband and wife together and kids in order of age. Try several compositions. Indoors/ outdoors, with equipment. With businesses sign or graphics or something else that catches your eye or that may catch others'- passers by and customers eye or web sites user's eye.
Take some with a more formal look and some with a more casual look for the clients to choose from to use in their business and for photos of the business at home.
You are the photographer/business person/art manager/photo designer/everything. Use that grey matter between your eyes or just behind and off to the side of the eye you poke into the camera viewfinder.
This is after all what freelance photography is all about. Hop to it and get thinking and to work and use whatever the business environment has for you to use photography wise. Take as many photos and a variety you think of and what the client thinks of and several you think of on site.
It is not "getting away with it." It is being able to think and do on your feet while you are there working.
Always a good idea to look the place and people over a few days before the photo shoot, maybe even take a few photos. Amazing what your brain dreams up in your sleep cause you have seen the place and people and have something to work with subconsciously in your sleep and other awake- thinking moments before actually getting to work site
A good photographer, especially freelance photographers are fast thinkers/doers/photo takers. Do what you think is right for the company plus extra. And include photos with clients ideas of what should be in photos. Photograph as much as you can for the client to pick and choose from and use.
A good recommendation from them is hard won advertising and an endorsement for you to do work for other businesses and individuals.
