'Bruno's' Bingo Lawsuit Settled
Last year comedian Sacha Baron Cohen made news in the bingo world when he was accused of disrupting a bingo game in Palmdale, California. This is not the first time Cohen has been sued for his antics. His movie "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan" was the subject of several lawsuits. People claimed they were humiliated and duped by Cohen's actions. Unfortunately the claimants had signed documents releasing the filmmaker from liability and all of the lawsuits were unsuccessful. Much like his character Borat, Cohen's character Bruno, a flamboyantly gay Austrian fashionista, depends on conning people into letting him into events and films reactions to his outrageous behavior. Cohen's brand of humor has been highly successful and Borat grossed millions at the box office and was an instant hit.
Cohen's bingo troubles began when he infiltrated a bingo game in the persona of his character Bruno. Charity director Richelle Olson claims that the trouble started when Bruno, who she described as an 'extreme, outrageous, offensive caricature of a gay man dressed in sexually revealing clothing with an Austrian accent' used foul language while calling the charity bingo game. When Olson tried to wrest the microphone from Bruno she fell and claimed she was attacked by members of the film crew. Olson says she went to an adjacent room and started 'sobbing uncontrollably' and went unconscious and hit her head on the floor. Olson claims she has been confined to a wheelchair ever since. Olson then sued Cohen and NBC Universal for damages including diminishment of 'marital relations.' Ms. Olson later dropped the assault and battery claims after her lawyer was shown footage of the alleged 'altercation.' Olson then sued for 'emotional damage.'
On May 5th, 2010 a Los Angeles judge sided with Cohen and threw the lawsuit out. The judge dismissed her lawsuit and ordered her to pay Cohen's legal fees of $17,000 (£11,300). Olson originally wanted $25,000 in damages and now she will have to pay close to that amount to settle 'Bruno's' legal expenses. It would appear that Cohen had the last laugh!
